A photography scratchpad
John Haugaard
About the title - This project is a follow up to the My 70th Year project that documented, on Polaroid film, My Year of Living Instantly. That project ran from August 13, 2023 through August 12, 2024. Literally, my 70th year. The photographs from that project, all 366 Polaroids, can be seen at My 70th Year. After the completion of that year-long project I look forward to Every Day After.
The Plan - Take photographs every day, and choose one for posting on this site. This will not be a portfolio. In many cases it will be my effort to just figure things out. Occasionally a posting may be delayed because more processing or thought/time is needed before it is ready. I may pull a past image, “improve” it, and repost for its day. Basically, no rules (or just my rules) except one photograph each day.
I hope you enjoy what you see or are curious about it.

February 10, 2025. Oriental Paperbush. I wish these blooms were a harbinger of Spring, but this bush generally blooms December through February. So, I need to find other hints of Spring.
February 9, 2025. The power of shadows. The phone app tells me that this photo was taken at 2:42 pm EST. Well done.

December 27, 2024. So, I guess this is a thing. See September 20, 2024. (It's a coincidence that my photo subject of yesterday is about 10 feet from the item photographed on September 20. The find today was unexpected. I mostly don't plan these these things - they just happen.)
December 26, 2024. A faint message from The Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
December 25, 2024. 500th consecutive daily posted photo. The first 366 were included in the My 70th Year project (a leap year) and 134 Days After.

December 20, 2024. Last full day of autumn. I've walked past this vacant building perhaps 50 times. Never before have I seen such a wonderful shadow cast. That is the fun of photography. Every moment different light, different seeing.

December 13, 2024. Friday the 13th bad luck for this house. Actually the bad luck started back in February when the house was badly damaged by fire. I photographed its slow descent several times for the My 70th Year project.
December 12, 2024. Won't be full until Sunday. But a late-afternoon rising of a waxing moon in late autumn.
December 11, 2024. Well, it couldn't last. Two days of solid rain followed by a windy morning. (See December 2 and 9 for the before photos.)

December 7, 2024. Trying out a new technique. Pretty pleased. A new mural down the street and around the corner.
December 6, 2024. Side eye.
December 5, 2024. Autumn leaves. A beautiful and mostly cooperative subject. Working with a new lens for macro photos. Still more work to do.
December 4, 2024. Ginko trees are amazing. They drop their leaves pretty much all at once. Our neighbor's, along our fence line, was fully-laden with leaves at 7:30 this morning, bare at 10:30.

August 28, 2024. The small town in which I grew up (then pop. 140) was substantially destroyed by a flood in 2019. The local fire departments are now doing controlled burns of some of the abandoned, derelict houses. It is just a coincidence that I'm in the area visiting family and friends.
